James & Wendie Clark – Missionaries Serving Botswana and Beyond

Pastor James and Sister Wendie Clark are passionate followers of Jesus Christ, originally from the west side of Portland, Oregon. Their journey of faith began in 1995 during a deeply personal season—while walking through the challenges of infertility. It was then, at ages 29 and 24, that they surrendered their lives completely to the Lord Jesus Christ, discovering the peace, purpose, and power of a personal relationship with God.

A Calling Confirmed Through Obedience

In 2002, James began biblical studies at a local Bible college. His heart for global missions soon led him to join a short-term mission team to Sierra Leone, West Africa. Wendie, at that time, wasn’t ready to embrace the missionary lifestyle—she loved her comforts and couldn’t imagine giving them up. In her own words, she told James, “If God is calling you, go. Just send me a postcard to let me know you’re still alive.”

But God was at work. While James served in Sierra Leone, he prayed earnestly for Wendie’s heart to be moved—and God answered. When he returned home, Wendie declared boldly, “You are never going on another mission trip without me!” That pivotal moment launched a shared calling that took them to Freetown, Sierra Leone (2005), Bangalore, India (2007), Kampala, Uganda (2009 and 2025) and Cebu, Philippines (2024). After James completed Bible college in 2008, he pursued seminary to be even more equipped for ministry. He graduated in 2017 with a Masters of Art in Ministry and Leadership.

Following God’s Lead to Africa

As they continued seeking God’s direction, it became clear in 2010 that the Lord was calling them to serve as full-time overseas missionaries in sub-Saharan Africa. They trusted God to lead every step—including finding a special education program for their eldest daughter. Through much prayer and persistence, the door opened to Gaborone, Botswana—a place that matched every need and desire, including quality education, English language, and meaningful ministry opportunities.

In July 2014, James and Wendie, along with their two daughters, arrived in Botswana to begin a new chapter in their calling.

Ministry Growth and Impact

Since arriving in Botswana, James and Wendie have been actively engaged in a wide variety of ministries including discipleship training, evangelism, church leadership development, and children’s outreach.

In 2020, alongside two local pastors, they founded the Disciples Making Disciples Botswana Trust, a Christian nonprofit organization focused on advancing the Gospel by empowering churches, Christian leaders, and mission-driven projects across Botswana.

Join the Mission

Through every step of their journey, Pastor James and Sister Wendie have trusted God to lead, provide, and open doors. Their heart is to see Botswana and the nations transformed by the power of the Gospel, one disciple at a time.

What is something unusual you have tried?

Pane worms, also known as mopane worms, are the remarkable larvae of the Emperor Moth. These fascinating creatures reside in the abundant mopane trees found across southern Africa. Far from ordinary caterpillars, pane worms are an unexpected source of nutrition and cultural significance. They are cherished not only for their role in the ecosystem but also as a delectable traditional delicacy that offers an encouraging glimpse into sustainable living.

Harvesting these worms is a practice that supports local communities, offering a livelihood and fostering a deep connection to the land. Preparing and enjoying mopane worms can be a fun and adventurous culinary experience, encouraging us to expand our palates and appreciate the diverse flavors of the world. In every bite, we find a story of nature’s ingenuity and the celebration of life in unexpected places, reminding us that beauty and inspiration can be found in the most surprising corners of our world.

Do you share your home with anyone else?

Our two beloved large dogs, Tau and Reba, are cherished members of our family. Tau, with his majestic name meaning Lion, embodies strength and courage, while Reba, whose name signifies Bring to Peace, fills our home with calm and tranquility. Together, they bring immense joy and love into our lives, and we are so grateful to have them by our side.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Every time we venture into the diverse game parks, we are filled with awe and wonder at the breathtaking sights that unfold before us. Each visit is a unique journey, revealing the majestic creatures roaming freely in their natural environments. The sheer diversity and beauty of these encounters leave us in shock and appreciation, reminding us of the incredible wonders of the natural world.
